A sawmill and a chemical works on the Detroit River
Trenton was founded in 1834 by Major Abram Caleb Truax, a War of 1812 veteran who acquired land along the Detroit River and built a sawmill, church, and store — the settlement was first called Truaxton. It was replatted as "Trenton" in 1850, incorporated in 1855, and became a city in 1957. In 1893, Captain John Baptiste Ford established the Michigan Alkali Company on Detroit River frontage he'd purchased in 1890; a 1943 merger turned it into Wyandotte Chemical Corporation — one of the defining industrial employers of the Downriver corridor.
