A township that grew up around an airfield
Romulus dates back to its establishment as a township in 1835, but its modern identity is tied to what Wayne County built at Middlebelt and Wick Roads starting in 1927: land purchase, a $2 million bond, and construction finished in 1929 for what became the Wayne County Airport. The first landing came February 22, 1930, formal operations opened that September, and from 1931 to 1945 the field hosted Michigan Air National Guard and Army Air Forces units as "Romulus Field" — today it's Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport.
