From Monguagon Township to an independent city
The Riverview area was originally part of Monguagon Township, created April 27, 1827 by the Michigan Territorial Legislature and named for a Potawatomi chief who lived along the Detroit River around 1755. Riverview itself was incorporated as a village in 1922, and became the City of Riverview on March 24, 1959 — with a population of 6,700 and an annual budget of $455,711 at the time — the same year Monguagon Township was dissolved entirely.

Riverview's median home construction year is 1969, with most of its housing dating from the 1950s-through-1970s postwar development era shared with several other Downriver communities.
